Jump, Walk, Turn

Description

College year: 2, 1st semester
Course: Computer Animation I

The assignment focuses mainly on rigging and animating legs. We were to make one character with legs (knees, toes, and heel; no hoofs or animal legs; must be similar to human), no arms, nothing else that require complex rigging or animating; then animating it in a jump, a walk cycle, and a 180° turn.

Since I focused most of my time on another major project (Dance), I purposely used a simple character design for this assignment, though I find the glasses character charming in its simplicity, especially with the expressive eyebrows. ^.^ The jump was unintentionally ambitious and difficult and therefore not quite convincing, but the point of it was to show his character rather than a generic jump, and it’s okay if you don’t understand his little gesture at the end of the jump, I failed in making it clear. I rather like the walk and turn; the walk I included a spring in his step to show that he is outgoing and confident of himself despite being a fragile object; and the turn I added the same characteristic with his perky snaps. The center of gravity of a character with a wide body and short legs was a little difficult to characterize his movements. Not top notch animation, but I can only get better! He is so cute. ^.^
